US based Corning Inc., a major supplier for Apple and the creator of Gorilla Glass, is investing Rs 1,000 crore to set up a manufacturing plant in India.

The facility, which will be located in Pillaipakkam near Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, spans 25 acres with potential for expansion and is expected to create over 800 jobs.

Corning has partnered with home-grown Optieums Infracom Limited for the manufacturing plant which will produce glasses for electronic devices, including smartphones.

This move marks the entry of another key Apple supplier into India, enhancing the country's growing Apple and electronic component manufacturing ecosystem.

Initially, Corning considered investing in Telangana, but Tamil Nadu was chosen due to its robust electronics ecosystem and proximity to other Apple suppliers.

Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies Private Limited (BIG TECH), a joint venture of Corning and Optieums, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government for building the brand-new factory at the state-owned SIPCOT Industrial Park in Pillaipakkam, generating 840 jobs.

The factory will manufacture front-cover glasses for electronic devices like mobile phones, including Apple iPhones, Deccan Herald reported citing sources.

They added that the company, for the first time, will bring the precision glass-processing technology to the country.

Corning invented ‘Gorilla Glass’ that is widely used in portable devices like mobile phones, tablets, and laptops, known for its damage and scratch resistance quality.

This comes as another major suppliers of Apple including Foxconn and Pegatron have already set up manufacturing plants in India, with several small iPhone component suppliers also planning to invest in the country.
