Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday (14 July) chaired a review meeting of the Basic Education department in Lucknow amid the ongoing school merger plan, reported The Hindu.

During the meeting, the UP CM said that the pairing of schools aims to enhance quality of eduction and optimise resource use.

“The Chief Minister underscored the need to implement the school pairing system with a long-term, inclusive vision, highlighting its benefits for students, teachers, and parents through better resource utilisation and improved education quality," a UP government statement said, as quoted by The Hindu.

He instructed authorities to ensure that schools with more than 50 students operate as independent institutions to improve administrative efficiency, accountability, and academic oversight.

Adityanath directed officials to use vacant school buildings created by the pairing system to start Bal Vatikas (pre-primary schools).

“The transition must be completed within a fixed timeframe, leaving no room for delay or negligence,” said the CM, as per the government statement.

He also emphasised that no child between the ages of six and 14 should be excluded from the education system. He asked School Management Committees—comprising Principals and Village Heads—to assume full responsibility.

“Adityanath said effective implementation of the School Chalo Abhiyan is needed to ensure that every child is enrolled and attending school regularly. To support students, the financial assistance of Rs 1,200 for uniforms, shoes, socks, stationery, and study material be transferred directly to the bank accounts of parents of students enrolled in council schools via DBT without delay,” added the official statement.

The state government has initiated the merger of schools with fewer than 50 students with nearby institutions to improve functionality and viability while ensuring continued education for affected students.
