In a major push to defence infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath government has approved the allotment of 10 hectares of land on an annual lease rent of just Rs 1 for the establishment of an advanced Infrared (IR) Detection Technology Centre by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The facility will be set up by DRDO’s Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, within the Lucknow node of the state’s Defence Industrial Corridor.
This decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday (22 July), and is aimed at bolstering national security and promoting indigenous technology.
In a notable policy departure, the cabinet relaxed provisions under the Uttar Pradesh Aerospace and Defence Unit and Employment Promotion Policy-2024 to facilitate this strategic investment.
The institute will also receive a 100 per cent stamp duty exemption on land procurement, though no further incentives will be extended under the said policy.
Land allotment by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is to be completed within 15 days of the state cabinet approval.
The IR Detection Technology Centre will also include a semiconductor IR detector manufacturing line, along with a modern clean room facility and manufacturing complex.
“This initiative is expected to provide direct employment to around 150 engineers and technical staff, while generating over 500 indirect jobs,” the press release noted.
IRDE, a key DRDO lab, plays a crucial role in developing thermal imaging and multi-sensor surveillance systems, both of which depend on IR detectors.
