Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday (12 October) launched the ‘Gomti Rejuvenation Mission’ to ensure the uninterrupted flow of the river, setting an ambitious target to intercept 95 per cent of urban sewage entering the waterway, reported The Indian Express.
The mission will cover the entire river basin, stretching from Pilibhit to Ghazipur. “The objective is to restore the water body to its ‘clean, uninterrupted, and pristine form’,” an official statement said.
At a meeting organised in collaboration with the Territorial Army, officials noted that 39 major drains currently feed into the river, 13 of which remain untreated. The mission will ensure that no untreated drains flow into the Gomti.
Currently, six sewage treatment plants (STPs) operate along the river in the state, with a combined capacity of 605 million litres per day (MLD).
Officials said the plan includes diverting additional drains to these STPs, constructing new treatment plants, and upgrading existing facilities.
The government has also addressed issues caused by encroachments that have narrowed the river’s flow in several districts.
Officials were instructed to prepare an action plan to “intercept 95 per cent of the urban sewage”, “reduce pollution levels” and “revive the ecosystem” of the river.
The initiative will develop new wetlands, including Ekana Wetland and Sajan Lake in Lucknow, and launch campaigns to remove encroachments, beautify river ghats, and expand green cover along the banks.
The Gomti Task Force, formed under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in January, includes representatives from the State Clean Ganga Mission, irrigation department, Pollution Control Board, Jal Nigam, Lucknow Municipal Corporation, Lucknow Development Authority, and subject experts.
Officials will hold monthly review meetings and submit quarterly progress reports to the Chief Minister’s Office.
Yogi Adityanath assured that the mission would receive adequate resources to avoid shortages of essential equipment, including track boats, floating barriers, and excavators.
