Israel’s President Isaac Herzog announced on Monday (13 October) that U.S. President Donald Trump will receive the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour, the country’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his role in securing the release of hostages from Gaza and helping to end the Israel-Hamas war, The Hindu reported.
“Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home but has also laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future,” Herzog said in a statement issued by his office.
Herzog added that he will personally inform Trump of the decision during his visit to Israel on Monday and that the award ceremony will be held “in the coming months.”
Trump arrived in Israel earlier in the day as part of a broader Middle East trip that includes attending the Gaza peace summit in Egypt. During his visit, he is expected to meet families of released and missing hostages and address the Israeli parliament, the Knesset.
The announcement coincides with the start of the first phase of Trump’s 20-point peace plan, which includes a major hostage-prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.
The plan, unveiled last week, seeks to formally end more than two years of conflict that began after Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack on Israel.
The Presidential Medal of Honour is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the State of Israel or humanity.
The Israeli presidency noted that previous recipients include former US President Barack Obama, who was honoured in 2013.
