Congress MP from Wayanad, Kerala, Rahul Gandhi started his speech in Lok Sabha on Wednesday (20 September) by mentioning Sengol, the symbol of transfer of power and how voting rights were given to all including women.
While supporting Women's Reservation Bill, he said, "India's journey is of the transfer of power to the people of India. The Panchayati Raj amendment bill was one such step." He called Adani issue "one of the distractions" using which the BJP is avoiding caste census.
The Congress leader asked for the inclusion of OBC reservation in the bill and called the bill "incomplete" without it. He also asked for immediate implementation of this bill, rather than waiting for a few years.
Gandhi mentioned that in his research, he found that among 90 secretaries of the country, only three hail from the OBC community. Thus, a caste census is needed.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
