The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has decided to distribute Onam kits only to those holding Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration cards. unlike previous years when the kits were distributed to all ration card holders.
The decision has been taken in view of the cash crunch faced by the state government.
AAY card holders are the poorest among the below poverty line (BPL) families. The kits will also be provided to around 20000 destitute people who reside in the state's rehabilitation homes.
While the total number of ration card holders are 93 lakh, the number of AAY card holders is 5,87,691, reported the Indian Express.
As a result, the allocation has reduced from Rs 425 crore last year to Rs 32 crore this year.
The kit comprises Semiya Payasam Mix, Ghee, Sambar Powder, Chilli Powder, Green gram, Coriander Powder, Split Green Gram, Turmeric Powder, Toor Dal, Salt, Cashew Nut, Edible Oil, and Tea.
Meanwhile, in some cheer for Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) employees, the government has agreed to pay salaries for the month of July before Onam.
