President Droupadi Murmu has begun her two-day visit to Tamil Nadu by having darshan at Madurai's Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple.
At the Madurai Airport, she was welcomed by Governor RN Ravi, Minister for Information Technology Mano Thangaraj and other officials.
The historic temple, which finds mention in the Sangam texts, is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi Amman, a form of Shakti, and her consort, Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva.
She spent about an hour in the temple and on her way out greeted people who had gathered to see her.
After having darshan at the temple, she departed for Coimbatore to participate in a Shivaratri programme to be organised by the Isha Foundation.
