In a dawn operation this Thursday (28 September), Punjab police apprehended Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a Congress leader and Bolath MLA, from his residence in Chandigarh's Sector 5.

Indian Express sources suggest that his arrest is linked to an old case filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Jalalabad, Fazilka.

Executing the operation, a team of Fazilka police, led by a Superintendent of Police (SP), arrived at Khaira's residence early in the morning. Expressing his discontent, Khaira, through a Facebook live session, claimed that his arrest was politically motivated, accusing the state government of highhandedness.

In a heated exchange with the police, Khaira demanded to see his arrest warrants and asked the officers in plain clothes to identify themselves. One of the officers, DSP Jalalabad Acchru Ram Sharma, revealed his identity and informed Khaira about the NDPS case. Khaira countered, stating that the Supreme Court had already quashed the case.

The visuals also captured Khaira's protest against the police entering his bedroom in the early morning hours. Known for his vocal criticism of the government's policies, the Congress MLA has been actively tweeting against the government almost daily.
