The Palayamkottai police have booked S Gnanathiraviam , the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP from Tirunelveli and around 20 of his supporters for assaulting a Christian Bishop Godfrey Noble.

The incident occurred as a result of a clash between Bishop Barnabas and Gnanathiraviam. Gnananthiraviam was recently removed from his post of correspondent of the St John's College and replaced with Arul Manickam.

According to a report by India Today, supporters of the DMK MP who reached the college to protest against the decision, clashed with the supporters of Barnabas and assaulted Godfrey Noble who was sent by Barnabas to speak to them.

DMK General Secretary Durai Murugan has sent a notice to Gnanathiraviam, asking him to give an explanation within seven days as the incident has brought disrepute to the party.
