Actor Kamal Haasan has announced that his party, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) would support the Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan in the Erode East bypoll.
This comes a few days after Elangovan had met Haasan to seek his support.
According to political commentators, the announcement does not come as a surprise because Haasan recently joined Rahul Gandhi in his Bharat Jodo Yatra and had a long conversation with him.
It was then said that Haasan is looking to do so because he wants to ally with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led Secular Progressive Alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Status of AIADMK and BJP
Both the Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) and O Panneerselvam factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are yet to finalise their candidates. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has indicated that it would support the candidate put up by the EPS faction.
Status of other parties
TTV Dhinakaran is expected to announce the decision of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) in the next few days.
The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) of Vijayakanth has announced its Erode Urban district secretary S Anand as its candidate. Seeman, the leader of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) is expected to field a woman candidate.
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has said that it would neither contest the bypoll nor support any party.
