Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai has demanded the dismissal of Minister for Excise, Electricity and Prohibition V Senthil Balaji and Minority Affairs Minister Gingee Masthan for the recent hooch tragedy that has claimed 18 lives so far.
Citing a statement by the Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu, which said that more than 1500 people have been arrested and over 1800 cases registered for bootlegging, Annamalai said that such a large-scale network could not have operated without the knowledge of Balaji.
Further, he said that one of the alleged kingpins of the network, i.e., Marur Raja is close to Masthan and used his relationship with him to carry out his business of supplying spurious liquor. Raja is the husband of a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillor in Tindivanam.
Earlier, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) had demanded the resignation of Chief Minister MK Stalin and Balaji over the incident.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
