Senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and party treasurer has filed a defamation case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai at the Saidapet court in Chennai today (12 May).
The case has been filed in connection with the DMK Files, in which Annamalai had said that the top leadership of the party had amassed huge wealth through corrupt means and not disclosed it in their election affidavits.
Addressing the media with TR Baalu before filing the case, DMK Organising Secretary RS Bharathi said that he was confident that Annamalai would be sentenced to one year in prison. He said that former chief minister, M Karunanidhi had won a defamation case against a newspaper editor, when he was the party treasurer and that editor had been sentenced to one year in prison.
On 10 May, Chief Minister MK Stalin filed a criminal defamation case through city public prosecutor G Devarajan.
Apart from Baalu who had sought damages of Rs 100 crore, Udhayanidhi Stalin and Kanimozhi had sought damages of Rs 50 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively.
Bharathi had sought Rs 500 crore in damages on behalf of the Chief Minister and the party. Annamalai had then responded to his notice seeking Rs 500 crore and Re 1 for associating his name with the Arudhra chit fund scam.
