Tensions have escalated in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district following the murder of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and a subsequent lynching in retaliation. The situation has led to the burning of several homes, triggering a political blame game between the ruling TMC and the Opposition CPM.
The victim, TMC leader Saifuddin Laskar, was fatally shot outside his home in Joynagar earlier today (13 November). Laskar, who headed the TMC unit in Joynagar's Bamungachi area, was the husband of a panchayat pradhan.
In response to Laskar's murder, his supporters apprehended a man they suspected to be involved and fatally beat him. Supporters of the ruling party also set fire to several homes in the vicinity, NDTV reported.
Local TMC leaders have accused CPM supporters of being responsible for Saifuddin Laskar's killing. However, CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty dismissed the allegations, stating that the murder was a consequence of internal strife within the Trinamool. He emphasised the need for a thorough police investigation to uncover any conspiracies.
Police have arrested one person in connection with the killing of the TMC leader, and an ongoing investigation is underway, with a case registered in the matter.
