Two Concerns, Two Strategies

Dear Reader,

Today, I bring you two articles that spotlight India's civilisational, geopolitical, and economic future. These pieces, one each by R Jagannathan and Prakhar Gupta provide intriguing insights into the long-term strategies India must adopt.

First Why India Must Focus on a Two-State Solution for Bangladeshi Hindus

In this piece, Jaggi writes on the pressing concern of Hindus being persecuted in Bangladesh under the interim Yunus regime while reminding us of the dwindling Hindu population in Bangladesh, which has plummeted from over 33% in the early 20th century to under 8% today.

Of course, this is not just about numbers—it's a stark reminder of the intolerance minorities face in Islamic countries, even under seemingly secular regimes. Jaggi argues that diplomatic overtures, like those being attempted by New Delhi in Dhaka, may not suffice to reverse decades of systemic persecution and erasure of Hindus.

Instead, he suggests bold solutions: creating autonomous zones for Bangladeshi Hindus or encouraging their migration to border regions where India can offer protection.

The big question: is it time for India to champion such a solution in Bangladesh? Read the piece here.

Is Nicobar Island The Solution?

Second — How India Is Finally Turning This Nicobar Island Into a 'Great' Asset

This one by Prakhar zooms in on Nicobar Island and its hitherto untapped potential.

Great Nicobar is now becoming a linchpin in India’s maritime and economic strategy. Located at the heart of crucial global shipping lanes, the island is poised to host a transshipment hub that could save India millions annually and cut dependence on foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore.

But it’s not just about trade. The island’s strategic location makes it a critical defense outpost against China’s growing interest in the Indian Ocean.

Recent moves, like auctioning mineral blocks rich in cobalt and nickel near the island, reflect India’s intent to turn Great Nicobar into both an economic and military powerhouse.

The article ties India's modern infrastructure needs to its ancient maritime prowess, recalling how the Cholas used these islands to dominate Southeast Asia.

Can the Nicobar Island once again secure India’s influence over the Indian Ocean? Read the piece here.
