Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V Somanna announced on Thursday (28 August) that he will not contest the forthcoming 2029 Lok Sabha polls from Tumkur, effectively putting to rest speculation about his candidature, reported Deccan Herald.
His decision comes amid growing buzz within BJP circles that party leaders might be contemplating his elevation as the Karnataka state BJP president, replacing the incumbent B Y Vijayendra, as part of a broader leadership revamp strategy ahead of the 2028 Assembly and 2029 parliamentary polls.
By withdrawing from the race, Somanna appears to intensify speculation of his change in role, although the party has not officially confirmed any reshuffle.
He told reporters, “I will not be contesting from Tumkur, but that does not mean I am stepping away from politics.”
With this statement, he clarifies that despite opting out of electoral politics in Tumkur, he intends to remain politically active.
