The Congress has moved a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in order to put pressure on the BJP regarding the Manipur issue.
The motion has been accepted by the Lower House, and the Speaker, Om Birla, will discuss the matter with floor leaders to determine a date and time for taking it up.
Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress deputy leader of the Lok Sabha, submitted the notice for the motion, which has received support from various parties including the DMK, TMC, BRS, NCP, Shiv Sena (UBT), JD(U), and Left parties. The motion will be put to a vote.
In addition to the Congress, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) led by Nama Nageswar Rao also moved a no-confidence motion against the central government.
The united Opposition hopes that this will compel the Prime Minister to address the situation in Manipur during the parliamentary session.
For the no-confidence motion to proceed, it must be backed by at least 50 members of the house.
While the Congress motion is expected to garner the necessary support, the BRS only holds 9 seats in the Lok Sabha, making its chances less likely.
The Lok Sabha, consisting of 543 members, currently has the ruling NDA with a strength of 331 members. On the other hand, the Opposition I.N.D.I.A alliance holds 144 members in the house.
Despite not having enough numbers to win a floor test, the opposition parties claim that they can still win the battle of perception by focusing on the Manipur issue during the debate.
