Omnious Timing: CPWD Issued Tenders For Additional Security Day Before Parliament Security Breach

One day prior to the security breach in the Lok Sabha, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) issued a tender for additional security infrastructure at the Parliament complex according to a report from The Indian Express.

The tender, titled "Redevelopment of reception lounge and other security infrastructure in Parliament Complex," sought pre-qualification bids for various components, including the renovation of the reception lounge, security blocks, electrical and mechanical services, security gadgets, bullet-proof morchas, and external development like sewerage and drainage.

The estimated cost of the project was Rs 35 crore, with a projected completion time of five months, according to CPWD documents.

Despite ongoing work on the new Parliament building, additional security measures were deemed necessary, evidenced by the recent breach.

In addition to the security infrastructure tender, CPWD also floated a Rs 50-crore tender for landscaping at the Parliament complex, encompassing irrigation, drainage, roads, footpaths, and horticulture.

The newly constructed Parliament building, part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan, has been operational since the Monsoon Session earlier in the year.

The breach highlighted potential vulnerabilities, prompting additional security measures, including facial recognition cameras for MPs and staff, and a pass system for visitors.

The CPWD spokesperson declined to comment on the project, emphasising the ongoing development of both the new Parliament building and the Parliament complex.
