Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (18 July) strongly criticised the Opposition, referring to their ongoing meeting in Bengaluru as a "hardcore corruption convention."

In his address at the virtual inauguration of the new Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, PM Modi took aim at the Opposition, accusing them of following dynastic politics and prioritising their own families.

He emphasised that these parties were not concerned about the development of children of country's underprivileged people.

“They (opposition parties) are not concerned about the development of the children of the country’s poor. Their common minimum programme is to increase corruption for their family,” PM Modi said, reports Indian Express.

The Prime Minister asserted that true democracy should be "of the people, by the people, for the people."

Highlighting the progress made in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Modi stated that tourist inflows have doubled since 2014 and are expected to increase significantly in the future.

He attributed this growth to the development of infrastructure in the archipelago, including the introduction of submarine optical cable fiber and the establishment of a medical college in Port Blair.

The Prime Minister said that his government allocated Rs 48,000 crore for the development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the past nine years.

"This is double of what was spent by the previous government,” he added.

“Today, people of the country have already decided to bring our government back in 2024. Even then, people who are responsible for the poor plight of India have set up their own shops,” PM Modi said.

Modi recited a poem in Awadhi, highlighting the disparity between the Opposition's words and actions.

“They (the Opposition) are singing some other song, but the reality is something else. A label of something else has been put up but the product is something else. This is the truth of their shop. There is a guarantee of two products at their shop. One, they sell the poison of casteism. Two, they do limitless corruption… Their product is – a guaranteed scam of 20 lakh crore rupees," PM Modi said.

PM Modi made these remarks as 26 Opposition parties have gathered in Bengaluru to unite against the BJP and strategise for the 2024 general elections.

The Congress, AAP, TMC, NCP, and JD(U) are among the parties attending the two-day conclave.

“These days, these people are gathered in Bengaluru. At one time, there was a song which was very popular: ‘Ek chehre par kai chehre laga lete hain log’ (‘On a single face, people put many faces’). When these people appear in front of the camera in a single frame, the first thought that comes in the minds of the country’s citizens on watching the scene is “corruption of many lakhs of crores.”

"The people of the country are saying, this (the Opposition meet in Bengaluru) is a Hardcore Corruption Convention…," PM Modi said.

According to PM Modi, at the Opposition meet, individuals who are on bail in cases involving scams worth crores are seen with respect, and if their entire family is on bail, they are even more honoured.
