Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday (7 October) announced that families of sanitation workers who die in accidents or disasters will receive Rs 35–40 lakh in compensation, Indian Express reported.
The payments, he said, will be processed directly through banks to ensure transparency and timely support.
The Uttar Pradesh CM also announced a Rs 5 lakh health insurance cover for all sanitation workers, aimed at safeguarding their health and financial security.
Addressing the Maharshi Valmiki Manifestation Day event at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Yogi Adityanath said disrespecting Lord Valmiki amounts to insulting Lord Ram himself.
The ceremony was organized by the Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Mahasabha Trust.
Describing Maharshi Valmiki as the “fate-maker of India’s spiritual tradition,” the CM said, "When Valmiki decided to write, he asked Narad Muni who is the person of true character I can write about. And then he chose to write about Lord Ram".
He said while writing Ramayana, Valmiki based the entire story on Lord Ram.
He highlighted that the Ramayana was centered around Lord Ram because he personifies Dharma—righteousness and moral duty.
The CM praised Valmiki’s timeless portrayal of Ram, saying his character remains relevant across ages and societies.
"Every relationship — between brothers, parents and children, rulers and subjects — finds an ideal in the ‘Ramayana’. Ram never violated the Lakshman Rekha," the UP Chief Minister said.
Condemning caste-based politics, CM Yogi said those who abuse Lord Ram are also insulting Lord Valmiki.
Taking aim at the Samajwadi Party, Adityanath accused it of hypocrisy.
“Today, those people remember Baba Saheb in every press conference, but then SP changed the name of Kannauj Medical College from Baba Saheb. We restored it. Lucknow’s Language University was named after Kanshiram Ji, but SP changed that name too. The name of Saharanpur Medical College was also changed. They have dual faces and see every work from a vote bank angle”, the CM stated.
He further alleged that sanitation workers were exploited under previous SP government and were paid very low wages.
“We will ensure that if any sanitation worker meets with an accident or an unfortunate incident, arrangements are made to provide Rs 35–40 lakh through the bank concerned,” he added.
Adityanath urged people to keep Maharshi Valmiki’s image in their homes, reminding them that every Ramayana narrator begins by offering respect to the sage.
He also appealed to the Valmiki community to to educate their children and send them to school, emphasising that empowered and educated youth can become future leaders of society.
