Chief Minister MK Stalin has said that the Onam festival is a part of 'Dravidian culture' but certain sections are trying to take away its identity in the name of Vamana Jayanti.
He said that it was a harvest festival and a celebration of the return of the Dravidian king Maveli, who had been defeated through treachery.
Further, he said that he believed that the people of Kerala would defeat such attempts.
He added that during the tenure of his father, M Karunanidhi as Chief Minister, the state government had declared a holiday on the occasion of Onam in districts like Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore, which have a sizeable population of Malayalis.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
