Chief Minister MK Stalin today stated that he was donating one month's salary for providing relief to those affected by Cyclone Michaung. The donation would be done to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He urged MLAs and MPs to also contribute.
In a statement, he referred to the severe damage caused by the cyclone in Chennai and surrounding districts and said that everyone should help in whatever way they can.
Further, he stated that while rescue works are continuing in parts of the city, life was slowly returning to normal.
His statement comes a day after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did an aerial survey of the affected areas. The central government announced that it would release in advance, the second installment of Rs 450 crore to the State's Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). It also approved a Rs 561.29 crore flood mitigation project for Chennai, in which the central government's assistance would be Rs 500 crore.
Earlier, Chief Minister Stalin had written to the Prime Minister seeking an interim relief of Rs 5060 crore.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criticised the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government's handling of the situation.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami asked the government to release a whitepaper on the Rs 4000 crore stormwater drainage works in the city as a number of areas continued to suffer from water stagnation and a lack of power supply days after the rains caused by the cyclone ended.
