During the Kanwar Yatra in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, a mob attacked the religious procession, pelting stones and injuring several people, including nearly a dozen Kanwariyas and some police personnel.
The incident occurred near Shahnoori mosque in the Jogi Nawada area while the Kanwar Yatra, consisting of around 2000 devotees, was on its way to fetch water from Kachhla Ghat in Badaun.
Rahul Bhati, the Superintendent of Police (SP) city, Bareilly, stated that the stone-pelting occurred from Shahnoori mosque and nearby residences at the religious procession.
To control the situation, a police force has been deployed in the area. Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhakar Chowdhry explained that a dispute arose near a religious place as the Kanwar Yatra passed, leading to the exchange of stone-throwing between both sides.
However, the police force swiftly intervened, bringing the situation under control, and the Kanwar Yatra proceeded on its route. While no critical injuries were reported from the incident, 12 people were admitted to the hospital.
The incident sparked a protest in the area, with the Kanwariyas demanding action against their attackers. According to reports citing Additional District Magistrate (City) RD Pandey, the situation has now returned to normalcy, and police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain peace and order.
