In a significant step toward easing bilateral tensions, United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday (9 September) announced that Washington and New Delhi will resume negotiations to address “trade barriers” between the two countries, NDTV reported.

Trump made the statement in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

He wrote, “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations. I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!”

The announcement comes only weeks after the United States imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, in addition to a 25 per cent penalty on purchases of Russian oil.

Trump Calls India-US Ties a "Very Special Relationship"

Earlier this week, while speaking at the White House, President Trump described India-US relations as a “very special relationship.” He emphasized his personal bond with Prime Minister Modi, saying the two leaders would “always be friends” and adding that there was “nothing to worry about.”

On Tuesday, he again referred to Prime Minister Modi warmly, noting, “I’ll always be friends with Prime Minister Modi” and calling him a “great Prime Minister.”

Modi Responds, Hails India-US Partnership

Responding to Trump’s message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (10 September) said that trade teams from both countries were already working to finalise discussions at the earliest.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), he reaffirmed India’s optimism about the partnership.

PM Modi posted, “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”

Background of Strained Ties

The latest exchange of warm remarks follows weeks of friction.

Reports had suggested that Prime Minister Modi had, on multiple occasions, avoided President Trump’s calls amid growing frustration in New Delhi over Washington’s “unjustified” punitive tariffs targeting India’s Russian oil trade.

With both leaders now publicly committing to re-engagement, this could be a possible turning point in restoring momentum to India-US economic ties.
