Joe Biden, the oldest United States (US) president in history, stated his intention to run for a second presidential term in 2024.
He made the announcement in a video, which begins with imagery from the 6 January 2021 incident at the US Capitol, when supporters of former president Donald Trump attacked it.
“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we’re in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are,” Biden said. “This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election.”
“Let’s finish this job. I know we can,” he said.
Biden pledged to defend American freedom against Republican platforms that target women's healthcare, social security, and book banning.
He also criticised "MAGA extremists," referring to Trump's political slogan
"MAGA," short for "Make America Great Again."
The Democratic Party is taking a historic and risky gamble by supporting President Biden's re-election bid despite his age.
At 86 years old by the end of a possible second term, some Americans worry his age may be a factor.
In a February Reuters/Ipsos poll, 59 per cent of Democrats agreed that the phrase "Joe Biden is too old to work in government" applies to him.
In February, doctors found President Biden to be "fit for duty."
Biden's approval ratings stayed at 39 per cent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll from April.
The US president might go up against Trump in the November 2024 election.
After losing the 2020 contest to Biden, Trump announced in November last year that he would seek a second term.
Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are the two leading Republican contenders.
As for Biden's 2024 campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris will join the president as his running mate.
