Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (9 October) welcomed the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace deal between Israel and Hamas, describing it as a step toward lasting peace in the Middle East, the Hindustan Times reported.
Modi also praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his leadership during the negotiations.
“We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump's peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu,” Modi said in a post on X.
Expressing optimism about the humanitarian impact of the accord, Modi added that the release of hostages and enhanced aid efforts “will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace.”
India has consistently maintained that it supports all diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring calm and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Modi’s remarks came shortly after Trump announced that both Israel and Hamas had accepted a US and Qatari-brokered deal involving a pause in fighting, release of hostages and prisoners, and partial troop withdrawal from Gaza.
The agreement, marking the first major breakthrough in two years of conflict, was finalised following indirect talks in Egypt.
The deal forms part of Trump’s 20-point framework to bring peace to Gaza, aimed at halting a war that has expanded into a regional conflict involving Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon, while deepening Israel’s international isolation.
News of the accord sparked celebrations across Israel and Gaza. Families of hostages lit fireworks in Tel Aviv, while Palestinians cheered in hope of an end to the prolonged bloodshed.
