U.S. officials have revealed that Russia asked China for support in the form of military equipment after Moscow kick-started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last month.
Russia even appealed for some additional economic assistance from China to counter the impact of the western sanctions on its economy.
However, the American officials refrained from detailing about the sort of military equipment wanted by Russia.
They also denied discussing China’s reaction to these requests.
“We are communicating directly, privately to Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale sanctions evasion efforts or support to Russia to backfill them,” Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, was quoted in a report by the New York Times.
He added, “We will not allow that to go forward and allow there to be a lifeline to Russia from these economic sanctions from any country, anywhere in the world.”
Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, however declined ever hearing of such a request from Russia.
He acknowledged that the present situation in Ukraine is disconcerting and asserted that China wishes to see a peaceful settlement to the issue.
