The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Thursday (10 October) awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado for her work in promoting democratic rights, ending US President Donald Trump’s active campaign for the prestigious award, the Indian Express reported.
Machado will receive 11 million Swedish kronor (around USD 1.17 million), along with a diploma and a medal.
The Nobel Peace Prize, among six Nobel categories, draws the most global attention.
Trump had been nominated by several countries and leaders and repeatedly claimed he deserved the award, often comparing himself to Barack Obama, who won the prize in 2009.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in September, Trump said, “Everyone says I should get the Nobel Peace Prize. I ended seven wars. No president or prime minister has ever done anything close to that.”
Nobel Committee president Jorgen Watne Frydnes said, “In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, this committee has seen any type of campaign, media tensions… we receive thousands of letters every year of people saying what peace means to them. This committee sits in a room filled with portraits of all laureates. It’s filled with courage and integrity. We base our decisions only on work and the will of Alfred Nobel.”
The countries that have officially supported or nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 include Israel, Pakistan, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Rwanda, and Malta.
These nominations generally cited his involvement in various conflict resolutions and ceasefire efforts, such as the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, de-escalation between India and Pakistan, peacemaking in the Caucasus, and roles in African conflicts.
Most of these endorsements were submitted months past the 31 January deadline.
The Nobel Committee does not consider nominations received after the cut-off for that year’s prize. According to The Independent, the committee usually finalises its decision several days before the public announcement, indicating that Trump’s Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal, reached just a day before the results, was unlikely to affect the outcome.
Of the seven conflicts Trump has claimed to have resolved, only three or four involved active fighting, including Israel-Iran, India-Pakistan, Armenia-Azerbaijan, and Rwanda-Congo.
Others, like the Egypt-Ethiopia Nile River dam dispute and the Serbia-Kosovo tensions, were diplomatic standoffs rather than wars.
Additionally, while Trump asserts he played a role in India-Pakistan mediation, New Delhi has clarified that the ceasefire was the result of direct military talks between the two nations.
