On Sunday (26 November), Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern over the trend of hosting weddings overseas. He found this practice troubling and encouraged Indians to celebrate their nuptials within the country.
“These days, a new milieu is being created by some families to go abroad to conduct weddings. Is this at all necessary?” PM Modi said on his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast.
The Prime Minister said that as the wedding season begins, Indians should consider purchasing domestically produced goods.
He noted that some trade groups predict a potential turnover of approximately Rs 5 lakh crore throughout this wedding period.
He added that these weddings present an opportunity for the nation's citizens to contribute their services in one way or another.
In promoting the growth of the 'Vocal for Local' initiative, PM Modi argued that by holding wedding celebrations on Indian territory, the nation's wealth would be kept within its boundaries.
He said that in the recent days, during the festivals of Diwali, Bhaiya Dooj, and Chhath, the country has seen business transactions exceeding Rs 4 lakh crore.
Emphasising the significance of purchasing locally made goods, the Prime Minister conveyed that such a campaign bolsters the national economy, offering equivalent opportunities to individuals in both urban and rural areas.
He further said that this approach also encourages value addition in local goods. Moreover, in the event of fluctuations in the global economy, the 'Vocal For Local' mantra serves as a safeguard for our economy, said PM Modi.
