French aerospace manufacturer Airbus on Monday confirmed IndiGo's order for 30 Airbus A350-900 passenger aircraft, which are slated to be delivered in 2027.

“We are proud that our fuel-efficient, next-generation A320 Family revolutionised domestic air travel in India, and that now the A350 is poised to replicate the same success on long-haul routes,” Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales, commercial aircraft said.

In April 2024, the Gurugram-headquartered low-cost carrier (LCC) made a significant move into the widebody aircraft domain by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900 planes. The contract was officially sealed between Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, and Benoit de Saint-Exupéry at InterGlobe's corporate headquarters.

A confirmation from Airbus indicates IndiGo has made a part payment for the order to confirm delivery slots. Although the order's list price stands at $12 billion, airlines typically negotiate substantial discounts for bulk purchases.

The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient wide-body aircraft in the 300-410 seater category. Recognised for its contemporary design, fuel efficiency, and comfort, it holds a remarkable 25 per cent edge in fuel burn, operating expenses, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over its predecessors in the market.

In June 2023, IndiGo placed the largest ever single aircraft order by any airline for 500 aircraft with Airbus to be delivered between 2030 and 2035. This order book comprises a mix of A320NEO, A321NEO and A321XLR models. Additionally, the airline is set to receive around 460 planes from its existing Airbus order by 2030.

With an outstanding order book of nearly 1,000 A320 family aircraft yet to be delivered, IndiGo continues to strengthen its position as one of Airbus' key customers well into the next decade.
