As part of its effort to get Mumbai rid of its perennially potholed roads, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Tuesday (5 December), invited fresh tenders worth Rs 1,362 crore for concretising the roads in the island city.

Earlier in January, the civic body had awarded work orders worth Rs 5,800 crore to five mega contractors for concretising a total of 397 km of roads in the city.

The 397 kilometres of roads includes 910 stretches, including 214 in the island city, 182 in the eastern suburbs and 514 in the western suburbs. All these roads have been identified as “Project Roads” by the civic body’s roads department.

While the work order for constructing cement concrete (CC) roads in the island city was given to M/S Roadway Solutions Infra Limited (RSIL), the work order for the eastern suburbs was awarded to, M/S Eagle Infra India Limited.

Three firms — M/S NCC Limited, M/S Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited and M/S Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Private Limited — were awarded the work for western suburbs.

However, Roadway Solutions India Infra Ltd has had its contract terminated by the BMC for failing to start work on CC roads in the island city close to eight months after getting work orders.

Out of the total roads that were to be concretised, the RSIL was supposed to carry works on a 214 km stretch of roads in the island city that would cover eight municipal wards.

In the new tender, the BMC has kept its deadline for receiving applications open till 27 December. According to the tender documents, the entire project must be successfully completed and delivered within 24 months from the date of contract award, excluding the Monsoon period.

In adherence to standard procedures, it is anticipated that the BMC will take approximately two to three weeks to issue the work order. Consequently, the commencement of the actual work is expected to take place around February 2024.
