Several airlines have begun international flight operations from the Chennai airport's New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB, T-2). The NITB is GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) compliant and spans over 136,295 sq m.
The new structure incorporates several eco-friendly features, such as skylights.
The NITB was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 April 2023, during his visit to Chennai.
The state-of-the-art facility has the capacity to handle 35 million passengers annually.
The trial run began in the last week of April. During this time, various checks and trials were conducted, and airlines gradually started shifting their operations to the integrated terminal.
Once the new integrated terminal at the airport is fully operational, the old international terminal, which has been handling some arrival operations, will be demolished.
Construction of the remaining parts of the integrated terminal will then begin, a process that is expected to take over a year.
In addition to the ongoing terminal construction, the airport is also constructing rapid exit taxiways to increase airside capacity and accommodate a higher number of flights per hour.
Aside from the new terminal, the Chennai airport is undertaking a variety of improvements. The airport is currently developing runways and taxiways, as well as constructing a freight terminal.

The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
