Vedanta Aluminium, last week, commissioned its new 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha.

This addition is part of their new 3 MTPA facility, which will take the overall nameplate capacity at the Lanjigarh refinery from an existing 2 MTPA to 5 MTPA.

A subsidiary of Vedanta Group, Vedanta Aluminium has been on an expansion spree to be amongst the top three global players and this expansion at Lanjigarh is a significant step in that direction.

A press release from Vedanta said the company is India’s largest producer of the metal. In the fiscal year 2022-23, it produced 2.29 million tonnes (mt) of aluminium, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the nation’s total production. In FY24, the company's production increased to 2.37 million tonnes, marking a three percent rise from the previous fiscal year.

This also places Vedanta Aluminium among the world’s top 10 producers of the metal, projected as the “metal of the future” for enabling the world’s energy transition while supporting key engineering technologies and sustainable applications.

It is a leader in value-added aluminium products that find critical applications in key sectors such as automotive, aerospace, defence, infrastructure, power projects, electricals and packaging, amongst others.

The company is also one of the largest producers of premier smelter grade alumina (SGA), a key raw material for the company’s aluminium plants in Jharsuguda (Odisha) and BALCO (Chhattisgarh).

John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said "We are delighted to commission the expanded capacity which strengthens our raw material security and reduces costs for our Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. It is a significant step towards 100 per cent vertical integration and strongly positions us for sustainable growth within the global aluminium market."
