Construction of the Gurugram Metro’s Phase 1 from Millennium City Center to Sector 9 is set to commence by mid-September, with the deployment of a piling rig, signalling the first step in groundwork, Hindustan Times reported.
Officials confirmed that the machine, vital for digging foundations of metro pillars, has been brought to the city and unloaded near the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) office in Sector 44, close to the existing Yellow Line’s terminating pillars.
“The piling rig will start operation once the Bhoomi poojan of the project is carried out by the Haryana government. We expect the work to start in the next 15 to 20 days. This piling rig can move on its own and it has taken us seven days to bring this machine to Gurugram from Surat on a trailer,” an official of the contractor was quoted as saying by HT.
The equipment can drill as deep as 180 metres and complete a foundation in just 12 hours.
The formal ground-breaking ceremony is expected later this month, with chief minister Nayab Singh and Union housing minister Manohar Lal Khattar likely to attend.
A public rally is being planned, possibly at Sector 29 or Tau Devi Lal Stadium, to mark the occasion.
The Rs 1,277 crore (plus GST) contract for Phase One was awarded last month to a joint venture of Dilip Buildcon and Ranjit Buildcon.
The initial phase covers a 15.22 km viaduct, 15 stations, a 1.85 km spur to Dwarka Expressway, and a ramp leading to the depot at Sector 33.
Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has submitted a traffic diversion plan for approval to ensure smooth vehicular movement during construction.
Phase One stations will connect Millennium City Centre to Sector 101, including key hubs such as Sector 45, Cyber Park (Sector 46), Sector 47, Subhash Chowk, Sector 48, Sector 33, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar phase six, Sector 10, Sector 37, Basai, Sector 9 and Sector 101.
