India’s First Barrier-Free Toll Plaza To Debut In Gujarat Under Multi-Lane Free Flow System

The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has signed an agreement with ICICI Bank to roll out the country’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, the Ministry of Road Transport said in a statement.

The project will debut at Choryasi Fee Plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat, making it India’s first barrier-free toll plaza.

The signing ceremony in New Delhi was attended by NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, along with senior officials from NHAI, IHMCL and ICICI Bank.

An agreement was also inked for implementing MLFF at Gharaunda Fee Plaza on NH-44 in Haryana, as part of a larger plan to extend the system to about 25 plazas nationwide this financial year.

According to the ministry, the process of identifying such fee plazas for implementation is presently underway.

Yadav said the agreement marks a major milestone in modernising tolling in India, laying the groundwork for a more efficient, transparent and technology-driven highway system that can be adopted nationwide.

The MLFF system eliminates the need for vehicles to halt at toll booths.

Using a combination of high-performance RFID readers for FASTag and advanced number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, it ensures automatic toll deduction as vehicles move through at highway speed.

The ministry said this shift will reduce congestion, cut down travel time, enhance fuel efficiency, and lower emissions, while also improving revenue collection.
