The buildings and factories arm of L&T Construction has secured an order from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to construct the Sabarmati Depot in Gujarat.
This work for the Mumbai - Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is secured through a consortium led by Sojitz Corporation, Japan.
The scope of this contract involves design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning of the depot spread over approximately 82 hectares.
Also, it includes various specialised equipment required to inspect and maintain the rolling stock based on the proven Shinkansen technology.
Upon completion, it will be the biggest depot in India for this purpose.
L&T is already executing civil viaduct and station packages, special steel bridges packages and Ballastless Track Works for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project.
India’s first bullet train project
The 508 km long MAHSR project will cover 155.76 km in Maharashtra, 4.3 km in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 348.04 km in Gujarat, with 12 stations en route.
Upon completion, the High-Speed Rail will operate at 320 Kmph, covering the entire distance in approximately 2 hours with limited stops and 3 hours with all stops.
98.87 per cent of the required land has been acquired in Gujarat, while in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 100 per cent of the required land has been acquired.
The MAHSR is being developed by NHSRCL, a special purpose vehicle set up to implement the project, with financial and technical assistance from the Government of Japan at a total cost of Rs 1,08,000 crore.
The line’s rolling stock will comprise Shinkansen E5 trains which are capable of running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph with operational speeds of 320 kmph.
Progress so far:
Engineering behemoth Larsen & Toubro is implementing three key packages in Gujarat - 237.1 km elevated line between Zaroli Village in the Maharashtra-Gujarat border to Vadodara, a 8.1 km elevated viaduct and station within Vadodara and an 87.5 km elevated viaduct between Vadodara and Ahmedabad.
Completed works in Gujarat include 188.28 Km pile work, 96.32 km of pier work, and 7.84 km of girders have been launched.
For constructing 508 km long viaduct superstructures of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project (MAHSR), State-of-the-Art construction methodologies like Full Span Launching Methodology (FSLM) is adopted.
High speed rail alignment passes through eight districts in Gujarat, i.e. Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Kheda and Ahmedabad. Work is in progress in all eight districts.
MAHSR project will entail an investment of Rs 72,000 crore in Gujarat in both land and construction.
