The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has made a significant move to enhance infrastructure by appointing contractors for nine major projects worth Rs 12,500 crore.

MMRDA aims to enhance transport infrastructure across an area of over 6,328 sq km, which includes nine municipal corporations. These projects are part of broader plans to direct investments and support regional development.

These projects aim to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in and around Mumbai.

The announcement was made in a release on Thursday (5 September) following approval from MMRDA's executive committee, chaired by Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sujata Sainik.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed optimism about the impact of these projects, stating, "I am confident that these developments will enhance the quality of life for the residents and boost the overall economy."

These infrastructure projects are designed to address "critical transportation needs" and improve the overall traffic management in the region, MMRDA stated in its release.

These projects will involve constructing and widening over 50 km of roads across the region. "These infrastructure projects will play a pivotal role in improving traffic flow and accelerating development in Mumbai and Thane," said Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA.

Among the notable projects is the Rs 2,727-crore extension of the Eastern Freeway, which will stretch 12.95 km from Ghatkopar to Thane. This elevated road is expected to be a crucial link for commuters, easing traffic flow between Mumbai and Thane. Additionally, an elevated road connecting NH-4 (Old) to Katai Naka will be constructed for Rs 1,981.17 crore.

The contractors have also been appointed for the Rs 2,727-crore Balkum-Gaimukh Thane Coastal Road, a 13.45 km stretch designed to connect Thane with other key areas. Other projects include a 3.93 km road and creek bridge from Kasarvadavali (Thane) to Kharbao (Bhiwandi) with an estimated cost of Rs 1,525.31 crore, reports Business Standard.

The infrastructure developments also include the construction of a 608-metre-long foot over-bridge at Teen Hath Naka in Thane, which will serve as part of Metro Line 4 and 4A. This project is expected to cost Rs 68.08 crore.

Additionally, a creek bridge from Gaimukh to Payegaon (6.509 km/ Rs 975.58 crore), a bridge from Kolshet to Kalher (1.64 km/ Rs 288.18 crore), and an elevated road from Kalyan-Murbad Road to Badlapur Road over-bridge (2.16 km/ Rs 451.10 crore) have been approved.
