Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) will tender for procurement of 238 rakes of Vande Metro for the Phase III and III A of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).
The MUTP is a project formulated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to bring about improvement in the traffic and transport situation in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
According to the Railway Board's decision, the tender for Vande Metro procurement should be floated by MRVC with stringent maintenance requirements of the rakes for the entire 35 years.
The MRVC shall consult Western Railway/Central Railway for the requirement of rakes with 12/15 car formation.
As per the decision, there will be two depots under the MUTP to be set up by technology partners.
These Vande Metro trains will be manufactured by the technology partner in their own factories while abiding by 'Make in India' guidelines.
The MUTP Phase III project includes a fast corridor from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Panvel with a connection to the proposed new Navi Mumbai International Airport, extending the Harbour Line to Borivali, and multiple additional tracks being laid on existing routes.
The MUTP Phase III A envisages extension of the Harbour Line from Goregaon up to Borivali, segregation of suburban and long-distance traffic at Kalyan Yard, and implementing a communications-based train control system.
