Indian Railways has commissioned an independent audit-cum survey to rank 200 important trains on various aspects of cleanliness. Apart from 72 premier pairs of trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto, the cleanliness survey will also cover other important services like the Sampark Kranti, Intercity and important long-distance mail/express trains.

Some of the items which the audit team will be keeping track of include the quality of linen, cleanliness of toilet, performance of on-board housekeeping personnel and the types of chemicals used in the cleaning process.

In addition to passenger feedback, the audit teams have also been asked to report on the overall cleanliness of the train based on parameters ranging from the chemicals used in the cleaning activity to the training of the personnel involved among others.

The survey on cleanliness in trains follows two rounds of audit done on 407 major stations and it is noteworthy because the railways are looking to address the spate of passenger complaints regarding the toilets and quality of linen provided in trains. It is believed that the results of this independent third-party audit would lead to an improvement in the cleanliness quotient of trains and contribute further to passenger comfort.
