Gujarat Congress MLA and prominent leader of the Thakor community, Alpesh Thakor, is quitting the party, along with two other state lawmakers close to him, Dhavalsinh Zala and Bharatji Thakor, reports DeshGujarat. However, the three will not be vacating their seats as MLAs.
As per a report by The Times of India, the move comes after a demand made by the core committee of the Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena. "Thakor Sena core committee has held a meeting and asked three Congress MLAs - Alpesh, me and Bharatji Thakor to leave Congress to protest against the ignoring of the Thakor community by the party. Right now Thakor is out of Gujarat, when he comes back we will take further decision,” Zala said.
A press conference will be addressed by these MLAs tomorrow (11 April).
The development comes as a surprise as only a month ago, Alpesh Thakor had dismissed talk of him joining the BJP, stating that he would continue to fight for the rights of the Thakor community while remaining in the Congress.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
