BJP president Amit Shah on Monday (13 May) openly challenged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to arrest him in Kolkata for chanting Jai Shri ram.
While speaking at a campaign rally in Bengal’s Joynagar, proclaimed that he is chanting Jai Shri Ram from the stage and would be leaving for Kolkata next. He thus challenged Mamata to arrest him if she has the guts.
He then stirred up the sizeable crowd in front of him by asking it to chant Jai Shri Ram in full force with both their arms up in the air.

A huge controversy erupted in West Bengal last week when three villagers were detained in the West Midnapore district for chanting Jai Shri Ram, while Mamata’s convoy passed through the area. The holy chant was reportedly considered “abusive” by Mamata who got down from her car to confront them.
Since then, the chant has become a sign of rebellion among the masses, some of whom have gone on camera to assert that they will keep chanting it, even if it results in their incarceration.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
