Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today (31 October) said that the army will build the new foot-over-bridge at Elphinstone Station, where 23 people were killed in a stampede last month.
“Probably first time we have asked army to come in to build what could otherwise be called civil work, but Elphinstone tragedy was so big. A call was taken to cooperate, seeing urgency of the matter as army has its role at the borders,” Sitharaman said.
“Army has come and they have inspected and assessed where the bridge is going to be built, they will be there at every stage of the work,” she added.
Fadnavis said the army will help construct three bridges, including the Elphinstone bridge, which will be completed by 31 January 2018.
23 people were killed and over 39 were injured in a rush-hour stampede at Elphinstone railway station's foot over bridge on 29 September.
Last week, Railway Minister Piyush Goel has announced a number of sops for the western suburban line in the wake of the tragedy. ANI

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
