Arunachal Pradesh Governor, Brig (Retd) BD Mishra, in a humanitarian gesture, saved the life of a pregnant woman who was in urgent need of medical attention, and her unborn child by taking her and her husband to a hospital in his helicopter from Tawang to Itanagar, sources from the Raj Bhavan said on Thursday (30 November), reports The Hindustan Times.
The chopper had developed a snag after stopping to refuel at Tezpur. The Governor, worried about the condition of the woman, did not want to lose time and hence requested an Air Force helicopter to help and got the woman along with her husband to leave immediately while he would return later in another aircraft.
The woman, on the other hand, underwent a successful emergency Caesarean at Heema Hospital in Itanagar. The distance between Itanagar and Tawang is over 200 km by road due to the hilly terrain and takes an estimated 15 hours by road and an estimated two hours by air.
The developments took place after the Governor overheard a conversation between a local MLA and Chief Minister Pema Khandu in which the MLA informed the CM of a patient in critical condition and that there was no helicopter service from Guwahati and Tawang for the next three days, said the sources.
The Governor, hearing this, offered to take the patient and her husband with him in his helicopter to Itanagar while the two officers who accompanied him stayed back at Tawang to accommodate the couple.
Mishra conveyed his best wishes to the mother and her baby after coming to know of her successful surgery.
