Bharti Airtel is planning to launch Airtel Xstream Smart Box for Digital TV customers which will be able to deliver broadband along with full-converged entertainment, Dream DTH reported on Friday (9 August).

Speaking about the service, Airtel CEO Gopal Mittal said: “... This will happen soon, and we’re already excited that once we do that, then it’s a full-converged play that we can potentially deliver across multiple spaces. There have been some concerns about cord-cutting in urban areas and metros. We haven’t seen any evidence of that yet.”

According to reports, the box will run on Android 9 Pie and broadcast Direct to Home (DTH), Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and Over The Top (OTT) content. The box, which is manufactured by Technicolor, comes with a 1.8 GHz Quad-Core CPU, a Broadcom VideoCore VHW (V3D-510) GPU and 2GB RAM with 8GB storage.

Airtel’s Xstream Smart Box is seen by many as a competitor to Reliance Jio GigaFiber which will also be providing broadband services on similar lines. The highly awaited broadband service from the Mukesh Ambani led telecom is expected to be launched at the Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting on 12 August.
