Tamil Nadu prison officials have seized 17 television sets, a couple of radios, ceiling fans, DVDs, beds, cots, chairs, curtains, washed clothes, costly shoes and coolers from the cell of terrorists who were lodged in the high-security area of Central prison at Puzhal in suburban Chennai. Those lodged in the cell included Islamic terrorists involved in the 1998 Coimbatore blasts, besides a person involved in the Kolkata fake note scam and an arms smuggler.

Tamil television channel Polimer News reported that electric stoves and food stuffs were also seized by the authorities during a surprise check in the premises. The luxurious life led by the convicts came to light after the prison officials seized mobile phones in which the inmates had taken selfies.

Additional Director-General of Police, Ashutosh Shukla, told media that the photos that appeared with the prisoners’ selfies were taken a month ago when mobiles were seized from them. Based on the photos in the mobiles, goods like television sets and other things not allowed in prison were recovered. Puzhal prison has been in news of late as the authorities there were allegedly involved in deals with prisoners to let them have mobiles or other things such as television sets. A couple of murders within the prison complex have also raised eyebrows over the functioning of the supervisory authorities.
