Barely a day after a statue of Russian communist ideologue Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Vladimir Lenin was brought down with a JCB earth mover in Belonia town, Tripura, another statue has been taken down, reports Republic.
The statue was installed at the Motor Stand in the town of Sabroom in south Tripura. While the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) that ruled Tripura for 25 years claimed that the statue’s demolition was an example of “Communism Phobia”, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – victorious in the recently concluded assembly elections – said that it was the oppressed victims of the left who were behind the demolition.
BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Subramaniam Swamy told reporters outside the Parliament that Lenin was a foreigner and a terrorist and said that parties could install statues of him outside their offices if they wanted to worship him.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
