The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) got Union Law ministry’s approval to prosecute senior Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX Media case, reports Live Mint.
In the investigation, the probe agency, which had already arrested Chidambaram’s son Karti in the same matter, is set to take steps to arrest the former finance minister as well. When contacted, Chidambaram refused to comment on the subject.
According to a senior official, who is well versed with the investigation, former Reserve Bank of India governor D Subbarao is likely to join the investigation. However, the CBI refrained from commenting on this matter. Subbarao had served as the finance secretary before serving as RBI governor in 2008. “The CBI is likely to ask him to join the investigation as well, since he was also at the helm of affairs at the time,” said the official.
Last year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) asked Subbarao to join the probe in the case to investigate the investment proposal by INX Media directors Indrani and Peter Mukerjea.
Chidambaram has already been quizzed and summoned by the agency, and the ED and the CBI had on 25 January told the Delhi High Court that custodial interrogation of the ex-Finance Minister was required in the INX media case.
