As part of a large-scale crackdown on illegal construction, the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has begun to give out on-the-spot challans for such unlawful practices, reports The Tribune.
The drive against illegal constructions has seen flying squads of the CHB issue some 50 or so challans in a single day. The challans can lead to the CHB secretary using delegated powers under the Capital of Punjab (Development & Regulation) Act 1952 to serve demolition notices to those found guilty of violations.
If the party found violating regulations does not halt unauthorised construction even after being served the notice, enforcement officials will destroy the structure the next day itself.
For the purpose of carrying out action against illegal construction in an effective manner, a dedicate enforcement division has also been created. Moreover, the CHB wants local residents to become informers against unauthorised construction in their areas; the identities of those who aid the authorities will remain anonymous.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
