Dr Krishna Ella led Bharat Biotech yesterday (24 April) announced that Covaxin will be priced at Rs 600 per dose for the State Governments and Rs 1,200 per dose for private hospitals, reports Times of India.
The Hyderabad-based vaccine maker also announced that the pricing of Covaxin in the export markets has been pegged in the range of $15-20 per dose.
This comes shortly after Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) announced that its Covishield vaccine will be priced at Rs 400 per dose for the State Governments, and at Rs 600 for the private hospitals.
It would however continue to supply Covaxin for India’s vaccine roll out at Rs 150 per dose, which is distributed for free by the Government of India.
Covaxin has been indigenously developed by Bharat Biotech in close collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Pune-based National Institute of Virology. As per the statement issued by Bharat Biotech, all costs towards product development, manufacturing facilities, and clinical trials were deployed by it primarily by using its own resources and internal funding.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that Covishield is manufactured in India on a contractural basis by SII. Covishield has originally been developed by British pharmaceutical major AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.
