The Union Health Ministry expressed great concern as it revealed that as many as 24 states in India have shown a test positivity rate exceeding 15 per cent in the previous week.
Moreover, around 30 districts have displayed a steep upward trend in Covid-19 positive cases in the last two weeks as the country’s total caseload stood at 36,54,164 on Friday (7 May). Ten of these districts fall in Kerala whereas seven and three of them are from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka respectively.
In fact, seven states, namely: Goa, Haryana, Puducherry, West Bengal, Karnataka, Delhi and Rajasthan reported a positivity rate of more than 30 per cent in the last week.
“There are 12 states with more than one lakh active cases, and seven states with 50,000 to one lakh active cases. Case positivity is an important indicator that shows how the cases are spread across the country,” Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Arti Ahuja, was quoted by The Indian Express.
Ahuja added, “There are only three states with less than 5 per cent positivity, and nine states have positivity between 5 and 15 per cent. Twenty-four states have more than 15 per cent positivity. The high positivity is the cause of concern for us and the country.”
Additionally, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr K Vijay Raghavan also clarified that a third wave of Covid-19 infections might not hit India provided that strong measures are implemented to curb the same.
